Reader Meets Writer

This page will contain a breakdown of reading and writing assignments for this course. In order to be ready for class participation, you must do the readings and writings, have curious thoughts and questions, and be prepared to think and discuss.

If you see a reading assignment listed for a day, then it will be homework, and you must be prepared to discuss and take a quiz about it in the following class. You will also be required to interact with each reading by writing for 10 minutes non-stop. It can be hand-written or typed, depending on you, but you must hold onto it for each unit assignment.

You will also have several impromptu writing assignments in class that might not be listed. If you miss the only day you are allowed to miss without receiving an "FAN," then you will need to get in contact with either a peer or me. Some of the writings will be inspired by short readings, random words, or YouTube videos; the idea is to bring the fun back into writing while kicking your brain into critical thinking gear.

As discussed in the first class, there are "habits of mind," which are the foundation to being a successful college student. Since you are in the beginning stages of collegiate life, now is the perfect time to kick old habits and begin anew. I know. It can be hard, but if you are willing to work with me, then you will learn and grow as a student and writer.

Please read the calendars and unit assignments carefully. If you ever have any questions about anything, please feel free to ask me via in class, e-mail, blog, or phone. There is no such thing as a "stupid question." In order to be able to write well, you have to be able to read like a writer, which is how most people learn how to write. Therefore, you will be engaging with a lot of reading and writing assignments.

Happy learning! :-)
